SQL Client Access Licenses (CALS) are used to authenticate users or devices to the Microsoft SQL server(s). Once CAL is required for each device or user (must select one) that accesses the server technology. SQL CALS can be used to authenticate clients to SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Ed., SQL Server 2008 Standard Ed., and previous versions of SQL Server (i.e. SQL Server 2005).
